Galleri Multi-Cancer Early Detection Test
GRAIL
Blood test from GRAIL that looks for DNA shed into the bloodstream by cancer cells. GRAIL says that in a clinical study it detected a signal shared by more than 50 types of cancer, and that a positive result points to the cancer's likely origin in the body. GRAIL says it should be used in addition to recommended cancer screening, that it does not detect all cancers, and that false-positive and false-negative results occur. Who can get it: prescription only. Request it from your own healthcare provider or online through GRAIL's independent telemedicine provider. GRAIL recommends it for adults with an elevated risk of cancer, such as people 50 or older, and not for people who are pregnant, 21 or younger, or in active cancer treatment. Price: $949 list price (checked Oct 3, 2026). GRAIL says a self-pay price of $799 or less is available through many providers. Blood draw included at GRAIL lab partners. Most insurance doesn't cover it; TRICARE covers eligible beneficiaries 50+. Note: GRAIL's site shows a limited-time price of $699 for tests requested online and ordered Oct 3-Dec 31, 2026. Regulatory: GRAIL states the Galleri test 'has not been cleared or approved by the Food and Drug Administration'. GRAIL applied for FDA approval in January 2026; an FDA advisory committee voted in favor on Sept 23, 2026, and the FDA decision is pending (checked Oct 3, 2026). GRAIL developed the test in its own lab in Durham, NC, which is CLIA-certified and CAP-accredited. Evidence grade: C. No health benefit has been proven: the main randomized trial (NHS-Galleri) did not meet its primary goal of reducing stage III-IV cancers, and no reduction in cancer deaths has been shown. In large GRAIL-funded studies the test rarely flagged people without cancer (specificity about 99.5%), roughly half of positive results (about 46-60%) were confirmed as cancer, and it found only about 27-39% of the cancers diagnosed. Results about 2 weeks after the lab receives the sample. Availability: throughout the US; outside the US only in select locations through distributors. HSA/FSA may be usable. Goals: longevity.
